Tracee Ellis Ross is an American actress known for her roles as Rainbow Johnson (on ABC’s Blackish) and Joan Clayton (from BET’s sitcom Girlfriends). When speaking to W Magazine about her taste in fashion Ross said, “I think I come by it honestly through my mother, but I also think living in Europe changed a lot. I think my eye works for me. It’s one of the things I get often—people say to me, “You have so much courage in the way you dress.” Below I take a look at some of her style trademarks…
Ross isn’t one to shy away from a pop of pink or an exciting floral pattern. In many of her outfits, she uses a mix of the former to create amazing outfit combinations from a simple tee and pair of high waisted trousers. When it comes to pattern, the rule seems to be the bigger the better. Most women might shy away from a bold, allover pattern but the actress seems to embrace them and makes them work by grounding a pattern with a solid, chic shoe and minimal, but clean accessories.
In many of her more exciting looks, it’s a combination of unexpected items that makes the outfit go from good to stellar. One might think that a pair of gold pants worn with a black blouse and blazer would be enough to reach their daily “it girl” style quota but Ross goes above and beyond. In one case, wearing said gold pants with platform gold tone lace up shoes and in another, with a more casual sweatshirt that takes a dressy bottom from night to daytime but in a fashionable and cool way.
In other scenarios, more is more seems to be Ross’ motto. Usually, a good rule of thumb is to wear one embellished item per outfit but when it comes to the Blackish actress, she likes to go a step further, and makes it work. Pairing a large embellished earring with an embellished leather jacket is no problem for Ross because she knows how to create the right mix and carry it off.
Knowing what suits your figure and having something tailored to your body can make all the difference when it comes to how a piece of clothing looks on you and Ross knows this. She wears a ton of dresses and one-piece jumpsuits and they always fit so well. Ross knows what kind of cut works for her body and she uses this to her advantage. Long dramatic lengths, fitted waistlines and draped hems are some of the usual suspects and she always carries them off with ease. There’s little need for loud colours, prints or intricate details when everything that needs to be said is done so through great fit and cut.
